Filming Panel Discussions: How to Get Clean Audio and Multiple Angles Right

Panel discussions are some of the most common footage requests we get — and some of the easiest to get wrong. Unlike a single keynote speaker, a panel means multiple voices, unpredictable back-and-forth, and a wider stage to cover. Here's how to plan for it properly, so the final video doesn't feel like a static wide shot of people talking.

Why Panels Are Harder Than They Look

A keynote has one speaker, one predictable rhythm, and usually a fixed spot on stage. A panel has three, four, sometimes five people speaking in an order nobody can fully predict, often talking over each other, gesturing, reacting to one another. If you plan for a panel the same way you'd plan for a keynote, you'll end up with footage that's technically usable but flat, a wide shot with no way to cut to the person actually speaking.

Getting Clean Audio‍ ‍

Audio problems are the single most common reason panel footage becomes unusable, and they're almost always avoidable with the right setup.

Individual lapel mics per panelist, not a shared table mic. A single mic in the middle of the table picks up cross-talk, room echo, and inconsistent volume depending on how far each person leans in. Individual lapel or headset mics on every panelist — including the moderator — give an editor a clean, separate audio track for each voice, which makes it possible to balance levels and cut cleanly between speakers later.

A direct feed from the venue's soundboard, when available. If the venue already has a PA system with panelists mic'd for the room, request a board feed (also called a "line out") in addition to your own mics. This gives you a backup audio source and often cleaner sound than a mic picking up room reverb.

A dedicated audio person for panels with 3+ speakers. Managing multiple live mics — muting when someone isn't speaking, watching for feedback, catching a mic that's slipped — is a full-time job during a panel. For anything beyond a two-person conversation, this shouldn't be something the camera operator is also trying to handle.

Test the mics before the audience arrives. A 10-minute sound check with every panelist actually wearing their mic and speaking at a normal volume catches problems — a loose lapel, a dead battery, a mic clipping on fabric — while there's still time to fix them.

Getting Multiple Angles

A single wide shot of a panel is the visual equivalent of a table mic — technically covers everything, engages no one. Here's what actually makes panel footage watchable.

A wide "establishing" shot of the full panel. Used sparingly, mostly at the start and for occasional cutaways, this shot orients the viewer to who's on stage and the setting.

‍ ‍

Individual or two-shot coverage of each panelist. At least one camera should be tight enough to catch individual reactions and expressions — a panelist nodding, reacting, or leaning forward to jump into the conversation. This is what makes an edited panel feel dynamic rather than static.

‍ ‍

A shot of the moderator. Easy to forget, but the moderator's questions and reactions are often what an editor needs to cut into a coherent sequence, especially when panelists talk over each other.

‍ ‍

Audience reaction shots, if relevant. For panels with strong audience engagement — laughter, applause, visible reactions — a camera angled toward the crowd gives an editor material to intercut, which adds energy that stage-only footage can't.

A realistic minimum: two cameras. One wide, one on a slow pan/zoom or manned by an operator following whoever is speaking. Three cameras (wide, moderator, and a roaming shot on whoever is talking) is the more common setup for panels with an active back-and-forth, and it's what allows an editor to actually cut between speakers rather than sitting on one shot for the full discussion.

Planning It in Advance‍ ‍

Share the panel format with your production team before the event: how many panelists, whether there's a moderator, whether questions will come from the audience, and roughly how long the discussion will run. A team that knows a panel has five active speakers and audience Q&A will bring a different camera and audio setup than one covering a quiet two-person fireside chat — and that planning conversation is far cheaper than realizing on the day that you're short a mic or a camera angle.

The Bottom Line

‍Panels aren't harder to film because the content is more complex, they're harder because the format demands planning that a single-speaker keynote doesn't. Individual mics, a dedicated audio operator, and at least two camera angles are what separate a panel video people actually watch from one that just proves the discussion happened.
