Behind the Scenes: Filming NYU’s Prison Education Program Graduation

In early 2024, we received a call that left a lasting impact—not just on our team, but on how we view storytelling through the lens. The NYU Prison Education Program (PEP) reached out to Parish Mandhan Productions with a powerful vision: to create a documentary-style film for their 2024 graduation ceremony at Wallkill Correctional Facility in New York.

It wasn’t just a video project. It was a moment of history, growth, and resilience—told from within the prison walls.

A Meaningful Project From the Start

As soon as Parish heard about the project, he was all in. Working with NYU on something so purpose-driven—something that truly matters—was an immediate yes. The goal was to document the power of education within incarcerated communities and celebrate the achievements of students who defied the odds.

From a production standpoint, it was a unique and highly sensitive environment. But as creatives who thrive on telling stories that matter, we were honored to be part of it.

Arriving at Wallkill Correctional Facility

The team arrived early at Wallkill Correctional Facility, located just a few hours from NYC, to capture initial establishing shots and gather B-roll footage. The location, framed by tall fences and layers of emotion, set the tone for what would become one of our most memorable projects to date.

Before entering, all of our gear was thoroughly scanned by facility security, and we followed strict protocols to ensure the safety and respect of everyone involved. From there, it was time to begin.

Capturing the Setup: Lighting, Logistics & Respect

Filming inside a correctional facility requires much more than technical know-how. It takes awareness, adaptability, and above all—respect for the space and the people inside it.

We started by documenting the venue setup: chairs arranged with purpose, podiums polished, and staff members preparing for the day. Parish connected with NYU program leaders and correctional staff to understand the run of show, scout angles, and establish shooting zones that would not disrupt the graduation.

Giving Voice to the Students

Parish had a clear idea from the start: this project wasn’t just about the ceremony—it was about the students.

So we interviewed a few of the graduating students, giving them a platform to speak about the NYU PEP program and what it meant for their future. The responses were raw, inspiring, and full of humanity.

“Education gave me purpose again. It reminded me I’m more than my past.” — PEP Graduate, 2024

These interviews became the emotional heart of the final film, bringing a personal layer to a story that often goes untold.

The Graduation Ceremony: A Moment of Hope

The event itself was nothing short of powerful. As students walked to receive their diplomas—cheered on by NYU staff, correctional officers, and family members—it was clear this wasn’t just another graduation. It was a celebration of transformation, dignity, and second chances.

Our cameras captured every hug, every tear, and every smile. It was a reminder of what thoughtful filmmaking can do: document change, elevate voices, and preserve moments that matter.

Purpose-Driven Storytelling Through Film

At Parish Mandhan Productions, we specialize in more than just visually beautiful content—we focus on meaningful narratives. This project with NYU's Prison Education Program reminded us of the responsibility and privilege that comes with documenting real human stories.
